The Queen Mother - A Tribute to Her Love of Betting and Horse Racing

We recently took a look at Queen Elizabeth’s love of betting, and that’s certainly something that she got from her mother. The Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was a woman renowned for her grace, charm and unwavering devotion to her country, but she was also a woman with an undeniable passion for horse racing.

The Queen Mother’s First Foray Into Horse Racing

We recently took a look at Queen Elizabeth’s love of betting, and that’s certainly something that she got from her mother. The Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was a woman renowned for her grace, charm and unwavering devotion to her country, but she was also a woman with an undeniable passion for horse racing.

The Queen Mother’s First Foray Into Horse Racing

Born into the aristocratic Bowes-Lyon family in 1900, Elizabeth developed an early fascination with horse racing and betting. Raised in Glamis Castle in Scotland, she was exposed to the excitement of the turf from a young age. Her father, the 14th Earl of Strathmore, was an avid racing enthusiast and instilled in her a deep appreciation for the sport, which she kept with her throughout her life. As she grew older, Elizabeth's passion for horse racing grew, and she embraced the thrill of the track. Whether attending races with her family or studying it with meticulous attention, she revelled in the anticipation and excitement that surrounded each race day.

As Queen Consort to King George VI and later as Queen Mother following his death, Elizabeth's love for horse racing only deepened. She became a familiar presence at prestigious racecourses across the country, along with other members of her family, with Royal Ascot holding a special place in her heart. Dressed in her signature pastel hues and elaborate hats, she graced the Royal Enclosure with elegance, captivating onlookers with keen eye for a winner.

But, it was not just the glamour of Ascot that captivated the Queen Mother, as she was equally interested in the grassroots charm of the smaller races. From the rolling hills of Cheltenham to the bustling atmosphere of Aintree, she embraced the diversity of the racing calendar, making the most of each experience. It’s safe to say that her love of horse racing was varied, and she really did enjoy all aspects of the sport.

A Prominent Owner of Race Horses

The Queen Mother owned and bred race horses throughout her life. She was passionate about horse racing and had a keen interest in the breeding and training of thoroughbred horses. Over the years, she owned several racehorses that competed in prestigious events such as Royal Ascot and the Grand National. One of her most famous horses was Devon Loch, which she co-owned with her husband, King George VI. Devon Loch gained widespread fame when he famously stumbled just yards from the finish line of the Grand National in 1956, snatching defeat.

Monaveen was another of her successful racehorses, a horse trained by Fred Rimell. Monaveen achieved notable victories, including winning the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival in 1950. Lucky Cottage is also a horse owned by the Queen Mother worth mentioning, who achieved a lot of success on the racetrack. Trained by Peter Cazalet, Lucky Cottage won several races during his career, including the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at Aintree in 1957. Buckskin was a horse that competed in flat racing and though Buckskin's racing career may not have been as impressive as some of her other horses, he nonetheless contributed to her passion for the sport.

Despite the heartbreaking moment of Devon Loch, the Queen Mother remained actively involved in the world of horse racing and continued to own and breed horses until her passing in 2002. While she may not have been as prolific an owner as some other members of the royal family, her love for horses and her involvement in the racing world were significant aspects of her life and contributed to her enduring legacy in racing history.

The Queen Mother’s Honour for Tradition and Triumph

Throughout her life, the Queen Mother's passion for horse racing was intertwined with a deep respect for tradition and a genuine love for the sport. She took great pride in her role as a patron of racing, supporting various charities and organisations within the racing community. However, it was her ability to pick winners that truly endeared her to the public. With an eye for talent and a fearless approach, she amassed a string of wins over the years. Of course, everyone stumbles at one point, and her moment came with Devon Loch.

While there are reports and anecdotes suggesting that the Queen Mother enjoyed horse racing and was knowledgeable about the sport, there is limited evidence to confirm whether she personally placed bets on horse races. As a member of The Royal Family and a figure of public prominence, it is possible that any betting activity she engaged in would have been conducted discreetly and kept private. This is slightly different to Queen Elizabeth, whose jackpot wins are highly publicised. While there may be speculation about her betting habits, her love for horse racing and her involvement in the racing world are well documented aspects of her life.

A Horse Racing Legacy That Lives On

The Queen Mother's enduring love of horse racing continues to live on in various ways, resonating within the racing community and beyond. Her passion for the sport has left an indelible mark on the royal family's engagement with horse racing, with subsequent generations actively participating in and supporting the industry. From Queen Elizabeth II's continued patronage of prestigious events, to the involvement of other members of the royal family in racing ownership and breeding, the Queen Mother's legacy is clear.

Her influence extends to the broader racing community, where her memory is honoured through races named in her honour and tributes paid at significant events. As enthusiasts and participants alike gather at racecourses across the country, the spirit of the Queen Mother's love for horse racing is obvious, ensuring that her passion for the sport will be celebrated for generations to come.
