Man Annoyed After Son Wins $1,000 with His Money and Refuses to Share the Pot

January 11, 2024

Visiting a casino brings excitement, anticipation and the thrill of a potential windfall. However, what unfolds when the winnings start pouring in can sometimes lead to unexpected problems. In the world of casino wins, a common question arises: should the winnings belong to the person who played the game, or is it only fair to hand the money over to the person who supplied the funds? Casino etiquette has many intricacies and the question of who rightfully claims the jackpot is up for discussion.

In this blog, Go Gambling has looked at the problems that arise when people can’t agree on the rightful owner of gambling winnings. Is it the person who fronted the money or placed the bet, or should it be shared equally and classed as ‘communal?’ With almost 4,000 comments, it’s a Reddit thread that ruffled some feathers.

Background Story

After a gambling win, a man took to the Am I The A-hole Subreddit to ask others, AITA, for make my girlfriend's son give me his gambling winnings.

The man explained that he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend for several years, and she had a son who had recently turned 18. They get along well for the most part, but they recently disagreed.

Whilst returning from a summer holiday, his girlfriend suggested stopping at a casino, where they decided to spend the night. While at the casino, the son and he bonded over a CSI marathon, but they eventually agreed to join her by partaking in some gambling. The man gave the son $100 and told him to go and ''make me some money''. Later in the evening, and having won in the casino, the son returned with $1,100. The man then told the son to hand the winnings over to him, and he’d give him another $100 to gamble with. But, the son declined.

The man was taken aback, insisting that all winnings were communal and should be shared, but the son disagrees. He believes the $1,100 winnings are his, as he was the one who won. The man and the girlfriend share the view that the winnings are communal, but the son is upset, feeling like his winnings were taken.

What Everyone Else Had to Say

Whereas the majority of gambling-related questions have a clear split of opinions right down the middle, there was an obvious popular opinion in this case. People agreed with the boy and said that the man was being unreasonable to assume that the $1,100 was his. Though there is a clear miscommunication between the two of them - a lot of Redditors highlight that the expectations of who would keep the winning should have been agreed beforehand - people sided with the son and agreed that he should keep the money, and chose the man as the person in the wrong for suggesting it was communal.

A-getaway-cat commented: “Once you give someone money it belongs to them! You have no right to steal his money, and I strongly suggest you give it back to him!”

WebbieVanderquak commented: “You can't make a condition after giving someone money, so the winnings are his. You even acknowledge they're his in the title of your post. Even if you had made it clear that the winnings were "communal" you'd owe him half that money.”

Throwit_amita commented: “You have no moral compass and limited logic. You GAVE the kid $100. You're not paying him a wage: you GAVE him money. If he makes money from that gift, that's his too.”

Dreamcager explained that even in the eyes of the casino, the son should be able to keep the money. As per the rules of many casinos, gambling winnings belong to the person actively gaming at the time of the win. In this case, the boy.

Dreamcager commented: “In the eyes of the gaming commission, it absolutely would be considered stealing. It doesn’t matter who put the money in the machine; what matters is who is actively gaming on a machine when it hits. That is, who hit the button.”

We were hard-pressed to find anyone with a different opinion, though Calvinmorralis gave an example of what should have happened to make the man the rightful winner of the cash.

Calvinmorralis commented: “In all seriousness, the only way this works out with you NTA is if, prior to giving the kid the money, you had said, clearly and explicitly, “okay kid. Here’s the deal. I’m giving you this cash. If you lose it, no big deal. Hope you had fun! If you make any profit, though, that profit is mine and I’ll give you 100 back. Do you agree?”

As MabelPines_ explained, there is a small compromise to be found. This would allow the boy to keep his winnings, whilst ensuring that the man wasn’t out of pocket.

They said: “Yeah, it’s your money, but he was the one who went out there and made it into more money. He should just give you $100 back and keep the rest.”

Justme7256 agreed, saying: “I agree that maybe he owes you that original $100 but if you didn’t expect that back if he had lost it, then you shouldn’t even get that back. If you and your gf pool your money as you go, that should have been explained to him at the beginning.”

Noremaxrevaew commented: “All you are entitled to is 100$ MAX. You probably figured he would bet it away and come back with nothing. He won the money and you are in the wrong for saying he didn’t earn it. Don't be who you are being.“

In this instance, very few people agree with the man, with most Redditors being on the same page as MabelPines_. The resounding opinion is that the money belongs to the boy, with the consensus that the man is indeed an A-hole in this instance. This needed to have been discussed beforehand for it to be a communal win.
